Paul Hawkins & Thee Awkward Silences - I Believe in Karma New Single

Andrew Jezus, Friday 9th May 2008

Hello everyone Paul Hawkins & Thee Awkward Silences' new limited edtion and download single "I Believe in Karma" is released on Monday (12 May). It will be available from itunes and comes with "My Darling Frankenstein" as a B-side. You can read 2 reviews of the single here: Cool Noise compare "...Karma" to Alice Cooper's "School's Out" and calls "...Frankenstein" "twisted, funny and perverted". They describes the single as a whole "The kind of thing I can imagine the late, great Alex Harvey doing if he grew up listening to punk". http://www.coolnoise.co.uk/2008/04/29/i-believe-in-karma-by-paul-hawkins-thee-awkward-silences.html Meanwhile "Rock-Metal Reviews" call us "the ultimate in post-structuralist anti-rock" and describe "...Karma as a convincing impersonation of a Samaritans phone call from a bitter and lonely I.T. sysadmin who’s just gone postal and rewired the corporate servers to spam the entire planet with a carefully formatted bullet-point list of his woes, compiled in date order from the exact moment of his fifth birthday". This review in full incidentally incidentally is the most entertaining thing I've ever read about us and I strongly recommend reading it: http://www.rock-metal-music-reviews.com/single-review-paul-hawkins-thee-awkward-silences-i-believe-in-karma/ You can also see the video for "I Believe in Karma" here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8JWy9gzKco The video was made and directed by the band itself and is the first in a three-part trilogy. Ian Button and Sarah Bowerman have to take the lion's share of the credit. (Incidentally, going back to Alex Harvey, you can click here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqx5j-FuqeI) and see his take on Jacques Brel's "Next". This has nothing to do with Paul Hawkins & Thee Awkward Silences but it is my favourite TV performance by any band ever.). Moving back to the band, we'll be launching the single at Silent Night on Tuesday 13th (at The Good Ship, Kilburn). We'll be joined by Extradition Order, Albino and a fantastic new band called Mucky Little Paw Prints who I thoroughly recommend. Entry's £3 if you bring a copy of this email, £5 if you don't. Lastly we'll be playing at the Spring Antifolk Festival at the 12 Bar Club on Saturday 17th May. We're on at 11:30. Entry's £6. We sincerely hope to see you soon

A big thanks to everyone who came out to support Sukilove on their tour of the UK. It was the best week of Jezus Factory's life……. Jen Long played 'You Kill Me (2008)' from the new EP last night.... http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/bethanandhuw/index.shtml A couple of reviews in already...... THE DREADED PRESS http://www.rock-metal-music-reviews.com/ep-review-sukilove-natural-regression/ You may not have heard of Sukilove, but apparently David Bowie has - and he thinks very highly of this all-star Belgian band. The Natural Regression EP contains four as-yet-unreleased tunes from Sukilove: one new version of an old song, two fresh tracks and a live recording. First up is the new version of the title track from Sukilove's second album You Kill Me, which begins with spooky music-box chimes before frontman Pascal Deweze enters the soundscape to lament a bizarrely dysfunctional (and, one hopes, fictional) relationship. "You Kill Me" is a moody track with a tongue-in-cheek comedic edge, and I can't be sure whether those tremelo'd spaghetti western guitar chords are mocking me or mocking themselves … I suspect that Sukilove are more than capable of doing both at the same time. The brace of new tunes in the middle of the Natural Regression EP are a little bit more straightforward. "Beauty Is Here" brings a more old-school psychedelic vibe to the proceedings, with Sukilove sounding a little like The Beatles might have done if they had stayed in Germany until someone else discovered the psychedelic sound. Hazy and summery but with a slightly melancholic tinge, it has all the best aspects of the music of the Summer Of Love without all the overblown hippie trappings. "Headfire" has a similar sound but a darker tone, with clangorous guitars, a slouching moody bassline, and more dysfunctional relationship lyrics. After a chaotic ride through the presets of an old synthesizer, The Natural Regression EP closes with a live performance of "Pretty Kitty", which sounds like Butthole Surfers spoofing The Cure. Haunted house keys and discordant staccato guitar work are the order of the day, and here we get to see that we weren't mistaken about the humour in "You Kill Me" … or possibly that Deweze has some rather strange phobic attitudes toward cats. The Belgian music scene seems to specialise in gloriously off-kilter guitar bands, and Sukilove are no exception to that rule of thumb. The Natural Regression EP is a little bit winsome and a little bit weird, but that's no bad thing – in a world of wannabes and style clones, it's good to know bands like Sukilove are out there doing their own thing. http://www.subba-cultcha.com/singles.php?id=18 SUKILOVE - NATURAL REGRESSION - JEZUS FACTORY Trippy melancholy with some impressively haunting sounds, not my thing but definitely for fans of Deus… (J.C)
